One cannot help but be struck by the sheer audacity of these attacks. The public hospital in Tebnine, just days after similar strikes near the Hiram and Jabal Amel hospitals in Tyre, was hit directly in front of the hospital, levelling the building and knocking out the electricity. This is not an isolated incident; since the fighting began on March 2, at least 130 medical workers have been killed, and 162 ambulances and healthcare facilities have been struck. The World Health Organization has rightly called for an end to these attacks, emphasizing the critical constraints on access to essential services for the most vulnerable patients.
What makes these attacks particularly insidious is the deliberate targeting of medical facilities and personnel. The Lebanese Ministry of Health has accused Israel of fabricating claims that Hezbollah has 'taken over' the hospitals, when in reality, the attacks have severely damaged the hospitals and left medical staff and patients at risk. The International Committee of the Red Cross, the Lebanese Red Cross, and the Lebanese army all have a medical presence in Tebnine's hospital, further underscoring the importance of these facilities and the need to protect them.
The impact of these attacks extends far beyond the physical damage. The destruction of hospitals and the loss of medical workers has severe implications for the overall health and well-being of the population. In a region already struggling with mass displacement, the disruption of healthcare services can lead to a rapid deterioration of health conditions, particularly for the most vulnerable, including the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing medical conditions. This is a deliberate strategy to degrade the quality of life in southern Lebanon, and it is a war crime.
